The 5 key steps to building an eLearning program: Step 5 - Technology

dreamstime s 19032889Our final post rounding out our 5 steps to building an effective eLearning program deals with the tricky topic of technology.

It's not hard to imagine the advantages technology brings to learning development, evaluation, management, communication and administration. The main downside lies in its potentially high cost - making your decision around which technology to use - an important one. Here are some pointers to help you match your requirements with the right solution.

What are the most important technologies to consider?

  • Rapid authoring tools
  • Learning Management Systems
  • Social networking tools

Here are just some of the questions you should be asking.

  • Is it a well established solution and not on the bleeding edge?
  • How big is the user base?
  • How will users access support?
  • Is this technology flexible to our changing requirements?
  • What infrastructure do we need to support the system?
  • What are competitors using?
  • How dependent will this technology make us on outside providers?
  • Are we exposed to any risks?
In addition to asking these questions, it's important to test thoroughly. We recommend asking your LMS provider to engage in a 'discovery phase' before signing up long-term. The last thing you want is to discover hidden surprises when you are already locked in a longstanding contract. Also, let your IT team review the development deliverables. They will be able to help you further consider which tools and approaches best serve your purposes.
We would be interested to hear your views on your technology challenges when rolling out an Learning Management System.
